What Does it Mean to Tap?

In jiu jitsu, tapping is one of the most important things you can learn.

Tapping means “stop.”

It does not mean you are bad.

It does not mean you are weak.

It does not mean you failed.

It means you are training smart.

When we train jiu jitsu, we practice moves with a partner. Sometimes your partner might get to a position where your arm, leg, neck, or body is stuck. If something hurts, feels too tight, or you know you cannot safely get out, you tap.

Your partner stops right away.

Then you reset.

Then you try again.

That is how we keep everyone safe. That is also how we keep learning.

A tap is not the end of training. It is part of training.

In fact, tapping is one of the ways we build trust. Your partner needs to know that when they tap, you will stop. You need to know that when you tap, your partner will stop too.

That is a big deal.

Jiu jitsu only works when we take care of each other.

Try This in Class

This week, pay attention to tapping.

If you need to tap, tap clearly.

If your partner taps, stop right away.

Then reset, slap hands, bump fists, and keep training.

Words We Use in Class

Tap: A signal that means “stop.” You can tap with your hand, your foot, or your voice.

Submission: A move that can make someone tap because they are stuck or uncomfortable.

Partner: The person you are training with.

Safety: Taking care of yourself and your partner so everyone can keep training.

Reset: Starting over after a move, drill, or round.

Parent Note

Tapping is one of the most important safety tools in jiu jitsu. It teaches kids to

communicate clearly, respect boundaries, and stop immediately when their partner asks them to stop. It also helps kids understand that stopping, resetting, and trying again is not failure. It is part of learning.
